Burnout. As caregivers, most of us have experienced it. Caregivers carry the weight of feeling overwhelmed, tired, depressed, and at times, helpless. Often, we prioritize others over ourselves, and in the process neglect our mental and physical well-being. If left unchecked, burnout can take hold and reach a crisis point.
To combat burnout, self-care routines are usually the recommended solution. But honestly, sometimes self-care can seem like that “one more thing” on an already long to-do list — leaving us feeling unmotivated and unwilling to engage.
But, what if, self-care could be simple and quick? Self-care doesn’t always have to be time-consuming, costly, or burdensome. Sometimes, just sticking to the basics can make a significant difference and is easier to sustain over the long run.
Check out these simple tips that can fit into even the busiest schedules. By sprinkling one or two of these into your daily schedule, you can focus on your well-being and lower the risk of burnout. Begin today, and steer yourself back toward a healthier, and hopefully happier, you.
1. Rediscover Your Passion
Before taking on the role of a caregiver, what made your heart sing? Were you a gardener…painter… writer? Rekindle those old hobbies that once brought you joy. Take 15-30 minute breaks to indulge in those activities each day.
2. Do Something You Love Every Day
Try to engage in one thing that makes you happy every day like listening to music, journaling, or reading a few pages from your favorite book. All you need is 10 or 15 minutes, a couple of times throughout the day. You’ll be amazed how it will refuel you.
3. Reconnect
Caregivers often find themselves disconnected from friends and family, despite living in a technology-driven world. We must be intentional to reconnect with people in our lives. Reaching out to a friend for a phone call (opting for a genuine conversation rather than a text) or scheduling a lunch date can help bridge the gap. If meeting in person isn’t an option, arrange a virtual lunch date via video chat. Check out some other ways to connect here.
4. DIY Dinner Nights
Give yourself a break from the weekly meal planning by having a do-it-yourself (DIY) dinner night once or twice a week. Enjoy a night off and let family members who can cook fend for themselves!
5. Try Something New
Venturing into new experiences always stirs excitement, no matter the size of the adventure. It sparks something within us. Allow your curiosity to lead the way and venture beyond your comfort zone. Whether it involves picking up a new hobby, sampling a different cuisine, or delving into a new genre of literature, trying something new can add a dose of thrill to your everyday life.
6. Get Outside
Nothing refreshes the mind and body quite like connecting with nature. Whether you sit outdoors and soak up the sunshine, plant new flowers, or take a stroll around the block, any of these activities will rejuvenate your mind and body.
7. Steal a Moment
Indulging in short, meaningful moments like sinking into a warm bath, smores by a crackling fire, adding a pop of color to your nails, or cooking your favorite steak on the grill can make a big difference to your mental health. Embracing these little luxuries is like giving a gift to yourself.
8. Unplug
Although our phones and computers can provide entertainment and relaxation, I’m sure, we can all agree they can also consume a lot of our time. Taking a break for a few hours or a day, now and then, can allow you to rest your mind, recharge, and reconnect with the world around you. With the extra time unplugged, consider taking a nature walk, reading a book, or practicing mindfulness.
9. Push Pause
As caregivers, we handle a plethora of emotions. It can take a toll on our bodies if we don’t process them occasionally. Pushing the pause button to sit with your emotions or shed a few tears is a healthy habit to form. Recognizing and expressing feelings can be a powerful move towards improving our overall well-being. So, give yourself the space occasionally to pause, process, and purge your emotions.
10. Treat Yo’ Self
Indulging yourself doesn’t have to break the bank. You can treat yourself to a mini-pampering. Small gestures such as buying fresh flowers at the grocery store, trying a new essential oil for your diffuser, treating yourself to your favorite magazine or plant, or indulging in a decadent cookie can bring positivity – and benefit your wallet too!
You Deserve It!
Remember, self-care isn’t about adding “one more thing” to our full plates. It’s prioritizing our well-being and recognizing that taking care of ourselves is not selfish, but necessary for us to continue caring for our loved ones effectively.
Nurturing yourself, even in small, simple ways throughout your day, will help you be better equipped to provide the love and support that others need. So, take a moment for yourself today and practice a little self-care. You deserve it!
