Planning for adults with developmental disabilities can feel like trying to put together a puzzle without having all the pieces. I know that feeling all too well.
About a year before our son turned 18, I started really thinking a lot more about his future—like, what’s the game plan for the next decade? Where’s he gonna live? How much help will he need? Will he be able to have a job?
I mean, seriously, where do you even begin with all this?

Know Where to Start
So, what’s top of your list? Is it finding a stable place to live, landing a meaningful job, or deciding on the best support for your adult child? For me, I always need a jumping-off point—something to focus on.
- If housing is a priority, you might wonder: What’s the difference between a group home and an assisted living facility? Or maybe you’re feeling inspired and want to create something totally new. Where do you even start?
- Employment might be the first step, but then, what kind of workplace will suit them best, and just how much help will they need to be successful?
- Maybe you need support right away. What types of supports are available? Is hiring paid support the right choice, or is it better to tap into your own circle—like family, friends, neighbors, or even folks from your church—your natural supports?
Funny how one question always seems to lead to another. But here’s some good news: there are amazing resources out there to help answer all these tough questions, ya just gotta know where to look.
No worries! I’ve picked some of my favorite future planning resources to help you start to put the pieces together. Let’s jump in and try to make sense of it all.
